The Calcutta High Court is turning up the heat on the police investigation into the shocking deaths of two BJP workers in East Midnapore on July 12. Sudhir Chandra Paik (65) and Sujit Das (23) died during a village dance competition on Muharram, but whether it was an accident or something sinister is now under fierce scrutiny. Earlier, local police claimed the duo died from accidental electrocution during the event. But the families and BJP allege a communal motive behind the tragedy, demanding a thorough probe. Here's where it gets spicy! The court was handed preliminary phone call records of suspects and key people involved in the investigation. After digging into these, the division bench of justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi bombarded the police with an important question: “Why should the Investigating Officer (IO) call up the postmortem doctor so many times before and after the autopsy?” Lawyers attending the hearing shared the court's shock. The repeated calls raised red flags about the objectivity of the autopsy report. Advocate general Kishore Dutta defended the probing cop, saying there was no special reason for those calls and no suspicion should be cast. But the judges didn’t buy it easily. They asked Dutta straight, “Do you have any proof to back your claim?” Adding more drama, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh’s single bench had earlier rejected a plea by the victims’ families for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Instead, he ordered West Bengal police’s Criminal Investigation Department to investigate. Unhappy, the families fought back and took their case to the division bench, which demanded a second postmortem supervised by senior doctors from SSKM hospital. It turned out that the reports from the first and second postmortems did not fully match, which Justice Ghosh called a "discrepancy" too big to ignore — making it impossible to deliver a fair judgment. Meanwhile, the court has delayed further hearings to September 15, giving the state time to send a detailed report on the controversial phone call records. Highlighting the political heat, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has claimed foul play. While the case unfolds, the public waits with bated breath, hoping justice will finally uncover the truth behind those tragic deaths.
