Egg Prices in Goa Drop to Rs 75 per Dozen After Prolonged Highs

May 18, 2025

After facing a prolonged period of escalating prices, the cost of eggs in Goa has finally shown a slight decline, offering a sigh of relief to consumers. The price of eggs decreased by Rs 5 this month, slipping from Rs 80 per dozen in April to Rs 75 in May. Over the past six months, consumers wrestled with fluctuating egg prices, witnessing a significant rise from Rs 50 per dozen in mid-2024 to Rs 70 per dozen in Oct-Nov, reaching a peak of Rs 90 per dozen in December. This surge was mainly attributed to the heightened demand during the Christmas season. Subsequently, the price decreased to Rs 80 per dozen in the ensuing months, hovering around the same range until the recent drop. A local egg vendor, A Bepari, expressed positivity towards the gradual decline in prices, stating, 'It is a welcome change that the prices are slowly falling.' He attributed the previous price surge to the increasing cost of poultry feed, particularly corn and soya, which elevated the production expenses for poultry farmers. While the feed expenses remained a persistent concern, vendors and poultry farmers highlighted the impact of weather conditions on poultry production. A local poultry farmer mentioned, 'The hot weather leads to increased thirst and reduced appetite among poultry birds, causing them to consume more water and less feed, ultimately affecting their egg production.' The recent price reduction brings a ray of hope, although vendors remain cautious due to the prevailing high feed costs and unpredictable weather patterns. Anticipating further price drops with the arrival of the monsoon in full swing by June-July, another vendor commented on the potential future market trends. Amid these fluctuations, the dip in egg prices represents a welcomed change for consumers in Goa, offering a slight reprieve from the months of soaring costs.
