Hold onto your hats! Mexico has just turned up the heat by raising tariffs on cars from China and other Asian countries to a whopping 50%! This bold move, announced on Wednesday, is Mexico’s way to protect jobs and overhaul import charges across many sectors, including textiles, steel, and automotive. The Mexico Economy Ministry spilled the beans that this tariff hike could impact a massive $52 billion worth of imports. But guess who's not happy? China’s Commerce Ministry fired a warning shot saying, “China and Mexico are important economic and trade partners of each other, and we do not want to see economic and trade cooperation between the two sides affected as a result.” Ouch! They also warned they will take "necessary measures" to safeguard their "legitimate rights and interests" but didn’t say what the secret moves would be. Why this drama now? Experts say Mexico is trying to keep the US sweet as Washington pushes Latin American countries to cool down their economic ties with China. With the US flexing its muscles and China ready to stand its ground, Mexico finds itself smack in the middle of a tense trade tango. Could this tariff drama change the trade game in the Americas?
