Get ready, Manipur! Prime Minister Narendra Modi is stepping into the state on Friday, marking his first visit since the ethnic violence shook the region two years ago. His mission? To brighten the state's future with fresh development and show commitment to peace and progress. Modi's visit will be a bustling affair, covering important stops in Churachandpur and Imphal. The Prime Minister will unveil new projects worth a whopping Rs 8,500 crore. A massive Rs 7,300 crore of this is for fresh projects in Churachandpur, and another Rs 1,200 crore goes to finished works in Imphal. Talk about a mega investment! According to Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, this includes game-changing infrastructure like the Civil Secretariat and the IT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Building at Mantripukhri, alongside the spanking new Manipur Police Headquarters, built for Rs 101 crore. Modi will also lay foundation stones for Rs 3,647 crore drainage and asset upgrades and a Rs 550 crore Infotech Development project called MIND. On social media, the Prime Minister said, “We are fully committed to furthering inclusive and all-round development of Manipur.” He revealed that among the projects are roads, a National Highway, and even women hostels. What's more, a unique all-women's market will open in various districts, empowering women entrepreneurs. Modi isn't just focusing on buildings and steel. During the visit, he plans heartfelt meetings with internally displaced people in both Churachandpur and Imphal. The Prime Minister will speak at two big gatherings — one at Peace Ground in Churachandpur and another at Kangla in Imphal — hoping to inspire hope and unity. But hold your cheers! The Congress party slammed the visit as a 'farce.' Jairam Ramesh, Congress communications chief, tweeted, “So now it is official. The PM will spend less than 3 hours in Manipur tomorrow. This visit instead of providing a force for peace and harmony is actually going to be a farce.” The party points out that the people of Manipur have waited 29 painful months for this moment but say the short trip is "too little, too late." The roots of the troubles go deep. Since May 2023, clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have taken more than 260 lives and displaced thousands. The Centre responded by imposing President’s Rule after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly is still suspended, with its term running till 2027. So, will PM Modi’s visit light the spark of hope or fizzle out in the crowded political air? One thing is sure — all eyes in Manipur and across India will be watching closely as this big day unfolds.
