RIL to Develop Mumbai's Largest Open Space Along Coastal Road

May 19, 2025

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is gearing up to transform Mumbai's urban landscape with a groundbreaking initiative to develop the city's largest open space along the Coastal Road. Spanning an impressive 70 hectares from Breach Candy to Worli, this ambitious project is expected to be fully funded by RIL. The proposal, which has been submitted for final approval to the municipal commissioner, marks a milestone in urban greening efforts in the city. Earlier this year, the BMC invited expressions of interest for the development and maintenance of landscaping, gardens, and the promenade along the Coastal Road. Notably, the BMC clarified that the project would entail no financial burden on the civic body, and the selected company would not receive any monetary compensation. According to a civic official, RIL will need to present its design proposals to the BMC for approval. The final design will undergo scrutiny by the BMC to ensure compliance with guidelines. While citizens have expressed interest in contributing to the greening project, it remains to be seen how these sentiments will be incorporated into the initiative. Despite reaching out to RIL for a comment, the conglomerate remained tight-lipped on the matter, leaving room for speculation on the details of this transformative project.
