Mormugao Port to Boost Cargo and Cruise Tourism with Rs 3,000 Crore Private Investment

October 17, 2025

Get ready for exciting news from Goa’s Mormugao Port! The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is aiming to pull in a whopping Rs 3,000 crore investment from private players. What will this magic money do? It will supercharge the port’s cargo handling capacity, ramp up the use of renewable energy, and give an eye-popping makeover to two key berths for cargo and cruise tourism. Hold onto your hats because the port plans to sign 24 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the glam India Maritime Week starting October 27 in Mumbai. Among these, two projects stand out: redeveloping Berth 9 into a multi-cargo hub and transforming Berth 3 to welcome cruise ships. N Vinodkumar, the chairperson of MPA, explained the exciting plans: “One of our MoUs, which will be signed, is for the redevelopment of Berth 9, which is going to be a major capacity builder for our cargo output. We will have a 350m-long berth that can cater to bigger-sized vessels.” That’s a huge upgrade for cargo traffic! Right now, the port handles 65 million tonnes of cargo, but guess what? They aim to hit a massive 100 million tonnes by 2035! That’s a big leap. On the cruise front, MPA is joining hands with a private partner to stretch Berth 3 to 250 meters. This means the port will be able to welcome up to four cruise ships at the same time. Goa’s tourism just got a turbo boost! Adding to the excitement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to deliver the keynote address at the Global Maritime CEO Forum during the India Maritime Week event. It’s going to be a star-studded maritime celebration. Looking far ahead, Vinodkumar told the media, “India was poised to become a superpower in the maritime sector by 2047.” He added, “Mormugao Port would also witness several developments in the coming years.” One of the cool upcoming changes is that Mormugao Port will begin hosting container vessels very soon. Feeder vessels from Mumbai will arrive regularly, linking the port to the big Mundra Port in Gujarat. This network upgrade means smoother and faster cargo movement. So, fasten your seat belts! Mormugao Port is sailing towards a vibrant future with mega investments, smart upgrades, and a cruise tourism sparkle. The maritime world is watching!
