Sam Rivers, Limp Bizkit’s Beloved Bassist, Passes Away at 48: A Music Legend Remembered

October 19, 2025

Sam Rivers, the longtime bassist and founding member of the rock band Limp Bizkit, has died at the age of 48. The band shared the sad news on Instagram, calling him “pure magic - the pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.” Limp Bizkit’s emotional statement said, “Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat. Sam Rivers wasn't just our bass player — he was pure magic. From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.” They also called him “a once-in-a-lifetime person and a legend among legends.” Sam started his musical journey in Jacksonville, Florida, where he played with drummer John Otto. He later met the band’s frontman Fred Durst while they both worked at Chick-fil-A in the early 1990s. This original trio later brought in guitarist Wes Borland and DJ Lethal to form the famous Limp Bizkit lineup in 1996. The band went on to release six studio albums, including hits like “Significant Other” (1999) and “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water” (2000). These albums made them worldwide stars and shaped a generation of nu-metal fans. In 2015, Sam Rivers had to step away from the band after being diagnosed with a severe liver disease, linked to heavy drinking. But thanks to a successful liver transplant, he came back strong in 2020 to perform again with his bandmates. As of now, the cause of his death has not been confirmed. But fans and band members alike remember Sam Rivers as the soul of Limp Bizkit, whose music and spirit will never end. Rest easy, Sam. Your music lives on forever.
