Durgapur/Kolkata: What a dramatic turn in the Durgapur gang-rape case! Two accused, Sk Riyazuddin and Sk Safiq, asked a local court on Sunday for permission to confess their roles in the shocking October 10 incident. Police revealed that if allowed, these men might become approvers, helping the investigation during the trial. This awful case involves a 23-year-old MBBS student who was attacked just after leaving her college campus with a classmate for dinner. Riyazuddin, Safiq, and four others—including the classmate, Wasef Ali—are already in police custody. Now, Mumbai court sent Riyazuddin and Safiq, who were first in police remand, to jail custody for two more days to think over their plea. The final order will come on October 21. The plea was made under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which lets a magistrate record confessions during a criminal probe. Digging deeper, Riyazuddin once worked as a guard at the medical college but was fired five years ago for bad behavior. Safiq worked in a local factory. The brave survivor told police that during the attack, one man held her down and raped her while two others watched. Riyazuddin and Safiq came later but shockingly didn’t help. Instead, they called the attackers back and demanded money. They took Rs 200 from the victim and snatched her cellphone! Other accused include Nasiruddin Sk, Apu Bauri, and Firdaus Sk. The survivor also shared how the classmate, Wasef Ali, molested her and ran away when she tried to resist. Legal experts warn that gang-rape can carry a sentence of up to 20 years, and extortion up to 7 years. Partha Ghosh, the survivor's lawyer, said, "We have filed an appeal that a test identification parade be done quickly." This case is full of twists and turns. Will the accused truly confess and help justice take its course? Stay tuned as the court's decision nears!
