India Shines Bright as Asia’s Renewable Energy Leader, Leaps Ahead of Coal!

October 22, 2025

India is stealing the show in renewable energy progress across South and Southeast Asia! A fresh report by S&P Global Ratings, shared by ANI, reveals how India zooms past coal and its neighbors like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The secret? Strong government policies, smart technology use, and big private money pouring into green power. The study said India’s renewable energy capacity is growing with lightning speed, putting it way ahead of regional rivals. While other countries have set ambitious green targets, S&P warns many may miss them due to roadblocks like poor infrastructure and lack of funds. "A larger scale of execution, bigger hybrid projects, rising storage tenders and robust private sector funding will likely drive these gains," the report said. India’s success comes from solid regulatory support, better power grids, and a friendly funding scene. "India leads its peers due to low-cost renewables (with storage) and a mature competitive-bidding framework," the report highlights. What’s exciting is India is seeing more battery storage projects, which help use renewable energy smoothly even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. But the story isn’t as rosy for other countries. They are betting more on gas as a temporary fuel. "Outside India, we assume countries in South and Southeast Asia will rely more heavily on fossil fuels over the next five years," said Cheng Jia Ong, a credit analyst at S&P Global Ratings, quoted by ANI. This reliance could make them vulnerable to price jumps and fuel supply issues, especially with imported LNG. When it comes to money, India’s green energy market is booming with huge private investments, while Indonesia and Vietnam are still struggling to attract enough funds and private players. India’s renewable dream is big and on track! In just the first nine months of 2025, the country added 35 GW of clean power. To meet its massive 2030 goal of 500 GW non-fossil capacity, India needs to add around 50 GW every year. Remember those “Panchamrit” targets India announced at COP26 in 2021? They include hitting 500 GW of clean energy, powering half the country’s electricity needs from renewables, slashing emissions by one billion tonnes by 2030, and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. The report also warned that power generation causes nearly half of all emissions in South and Southeast Asia. As this region’s power demand jumps from 15% to 20% of the world total by 2050, India’s green leap stands out as a bright, action-packed example powered by smart policies and investment.
