A dramatic move shook Pakistan’s political scene on Friday! The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi ordered that Aleema Khan’s passport, national identity card, and bank accounts be immediately blocked. Who’s Aleema Khan? She is the sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, now behind bars. Why this harsh order? Aleema skipped all court hearings in a terrorism case tied to huge protests last November. The court had even issued several non-bailable arrest warrants against her, but she kept missing the hearings. ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah expressed strong frustration during the hearing. He said, “how Aleema was present everywhere but failed to appear before the court.” The judge didn’t stop there. He demanded Aleema’s attendance be ensured in court and ordered the blocking of her computerized national identity card (CNIC) and passport. The State Bank of Pakistan also got a strict command to freeze all her bank accounts. What about her properties? The court ordered the forfeiture of the properties belonging to her guarantor to the state. The hearing was paused and will continue on October 27. Aleema Khan has been very critical of Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Adding spicy drama, her two sons were arrested by Punjab police in terrorism cases but later got bail. Remember the massive protests on November 26, 2023? Over 10,000 supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party marched into Islamabad. They broke a ban on public gatherings and clashed fiercely with 20,000 security forces deployed to stop them. As a result, multiple cases were filed against many PTI leaders under the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. This court action shows how Pakistan’s legal system is tightening the noose around PTI and its family members. The coming weeks will be full of political fireworks!
