Moral policing drama erupts again in Dakshina Kannada after four months! On November 6, two men named Mustafa and Mustafa Periyadka were snapped by the Uppinangady police for abusing and allegedly attacking a group of 10 undergraduate students from different religions. The students were simply on their way to visit their sick classmate in Periyadka. They had just gotten off a bus and were walking when the accused blocked their way on a motorcycle. The angry duo asked for the students' names, hometowns, and college details. Then, in a shocking display, they verbally abused the girls for mixing with boys from another religion. Things took a nasty turn when one of the boys was assaulted. The victim promptly complained, and the police wasted no time registering a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: 126(2), 352, 351(2), 115(2), and 353(2). This isn't the first time moral policing stirred trouble in the area. Back in July, two others were arrested in Puttur for a similar incident. They confronted a boy and a girl talking at Beeramale Betta, insulted them publicly, and even posted a video online, wrongly assuming the pair belonged to different religions. It later turned out they were from the same religion. With these events, Dakshina Kannada sees a worrying return of moral policing tensions, reminding us of the challenges students face simply for being friends across religious lines.
