The Central government has exciting news for Jammu and Kashmir’s villagers! They have approved a boost in the number of MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) workdays from 100 to 150 for the Union Territory, especially helping areas hit hard by floods and landslides. Why this big jump? The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare pointed out that the flood, cloud burst, and landslide disasters severely impacted many families. So, they suggested adding 50 more workdays on top of the usual 100 days per household in the 2025-26 financial year. This means rural households affected by natural calamities will get a better chance to earn wages by doing public works like building roads, repairing infrastructure, and other essential jobs. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha greeted this decision warmly. He tweeted on November 21, 2025, “I'm grateful to PM Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan for increasing number of person-days provided under MGNREGA to 150 days for J&K to enhance livelihood security in rural areas affected by natural calamity.” Mr. Sinha also shared that a total of 1,962 panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir were declared "flood-affected". The floods caused big troubles, hurting people’s main ways to make a living. He added, “Special relief was sought from the government of India, and today's decision will ensure stable income to vulnerable rural households, relieve the families from economic distress and create durable assets.” So, for J&K’s flood-hit villagers, this rise in MGNREGA days is like a ray of hope. More workdays mean more money, fewer worries, and stronger village infrastructure! This boost will help many families survive tough times and build a better future in their homes and fields.
