Punjab Farmers Rally in Chandigarh for MSP, Higher Sugarcane Price and Panjab University Election
November 27, 2025
Farmers from Punjab staged a grand gathering in Chandigarh on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, to demand their long-awaited rights. Over 30 farmer and farm labour unions united under the ‘Samyukt Kisan Morcha’ (SKM) to mark five years since their famous anti-farm law agitation hit the streets against the Central Government. They handed over a strong memorandum to local authorities, addressed to the President of India.
“We have demanded that agriculture and other sectors related to agriculture should be excluded from the tax-free trade agreements being made with various countries. MSP and purchase guarantee laws and permanent employment should be arranged. Besides, the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 should not be passed,” said Jagmohan Singh, general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Dakonda) and SKM member.
This fiery leader didn’t stop there. He echoed the cries of students of Panjab University too. The students want the university’s senate elections announced soon. They demand the repeal of the National Education Policy and want education to be moved to the State List from the Concurrent List in the Constitution. The Punjab government should create and carry out a suitable, scientific, and democratic education policy tailored for the state.
The farmers also raised their voices for better sugarcane payments. “We want the rate of sugarcane increased to ₹500 per quintal. The cases, fines, etc., against farmers for burning paddy stubble should be cancelled. All remaining demands of the ‘Delhi agitation’ and all cases against farmers during the struggle should be dropped,” Jagmohan Singh added, making the protest louder.
Meanwhile, Panjab University students staged their own protest under the banner ‘Panjab University Bachao Morcha’, demanding the announcement of Senate elections. Even though the university had declared a holiday on November 26, students called for a complete shutdown. Though the administration had started the election process seeking approval from the Vice-President of India, who is also the Chancellor, the students remain firm: no peace until the Senate poll schedule is announced.
A group of ex-senators, including Professor Chaman Lal, weighed in, demanding the election schedule be released immediately. He said, “The elected Senate should address the issue of academic reforms essential for the growth of the University, but without harming the democratic structure of the University.” He made a bold call to the Central government: either hand over Chandigarh to Punjab or clearly declare that Chandigarh, and thus Panjab University, will be transferred to Punjab within a set time. This move would solve the University’s identity crisis, returning it to a Punjab State University as it was before 1966.
The energetic protests and solid demands from farmers and students show this fight is far from over. With the wind of change blowing in Chandigarh, all eyes are on how the government will respond to these fiery calls for justice and reform.
