Panjab University Students Declare Gherao of BJP Offices Over Senate Poll Delay
November 27, 2025
Panjab University (PU) students are turning up the heat! On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, these fiery students announced a strong move — they will gherao the BJP offices in Punjab and Chandigarh on December 3. Why? They want the long-awaited senate poll schedule declared at last.
The students, rallying under the name Panjab University Bachao Morcha, are not backing down. They said their protest will continue until the poll dates are announced. Joining hands with farmers' bodies, religious groups, and other student organizations, they plan to surround the BJP offices and make their voices heard loud and clear.
What sparked this agitation? Despite promises from Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu that the senate election schedule would soon be out, no official update has arrived. The students have been patiently waiting for several days, growing restless as the delay drags on.
The protest heated up on Wednesday when PU students shut down the university completely! Offices, departments, and even exams scheduled that day were put on hold as the varsity declared a holiday to ease tensions. The protest gathered near the vice chancellor's office, with student leader Jodh Singh saying, "We will continue until our demand is met."
Police were on high alert, deploying anti-riot vehicles and heavy security to keep peace on campus. This is not a new battle. Earlier on November 10, students had held a massive rally, even storming the university gates and clashing with security personnel.
The trouble started after the Centre tried to change the structure of Panjab University's governing bodies — the senate and syndicate — stirring unrest among students. After huge protests and political pressure, the Ministry of Education backed down on November 7 and withdrew its October 28 notification about reshaping these bodies.
But the students didn’t stop. They shifted focus to demanding the election schedule itself. When student leaders met the vice chancellor, they were told the schedule had been sent for approval to the Vice President of India, the university's chancellor — but still no schedule was announced.
Support for the student movement is pouring in from many quarters. Punjab’s major political parties including the Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Congress have voiced their backing. Farmers' groups like the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), SKM (Non-Political), and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha are also joining hands with the students.
The countdown begins! Will the BJP offices hear the resounding gherao chants on December 3? PU students seem determined to not let this issue die down anytime soon. Stay tuned as this fiery agitation unfolds!
