India Ships 12.5GW of Solar Module Capacity in Q1 2025

May 27, 2025

India saw a surge in solar energy developments in the first quarter of 2025. According to data from JMK Research, the country exported 12.5GW of module capacity during this period. More than half of these modules were supplied by the top five solar manufacturers, with Waaree taking the lead by shipping over 2GW. TrinaSolar, a Chinese company, was one of the two international manufacturers contributing to the Indian market in Q1 2025. Domestic manufacturers accounted for nearly 90% of all modules shipped. In total, 24 manufacturers exported capacity during the quarter, with four exporting a combined capacity of 572MW. Additionally, Indian manufacturers like Adani and Waaree doubled their module capacity exports quarterly. The United States emerged as the primary market for Indian solar PV module exports. Nine domestic manufacturers announced plans to establish 17.8GW of annual nameplate capacity for modules. Out of these announcements, GP Eco Solutions intends to build a module assembly plant with a 5GW nameplate capacity and a 2GW cell processing plant in Madhya Pradesh, with an investment of INR10 billion (US$117 million) by fiscal year 2028. Various manufacturers commissioned new module and/or cell capacities in Q1 2025. Tata Power established 4.3GW of solar cells and modules in Tamil Nadu, Avaada launched 1.5GW of TOPCon modules in Uttar Pradesh, Goldi Solar initiated its AI-powered manufacturing line in Gujarat, and Waaree commissioned a 5.4GW solar cell processing plant in Gujarat. The increased domestic annual nameplate capacity also led to additions in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), with 11.8GW added in Q1 2025, reaching a total annual nameplate capacity of 74.23GW across over 90 manufacturers. The top ten manufacturers listed in the ALMM contributed to almost two-thirds of the total capacity. On the solar PV installation front, India witnessed the installation of nearly 7.8GW in Q1 2025, with 5.93GW from utility-scale projects, reflecting a 12.2% increase from the previous quarter. India's total solar PV installation capacity reached 105.6GW by the end of March 2025, with an additional 70.9GW in the pipeline expected to be commissioned within the next 4-5 years. Solar PV holds a significant percentage, 48%, of all renewable energy installed in India. Looking ahead, JMK Research forecasts 11.9GW utility-scale solar PV additions in the next two quarters. Over the fiscal year 2026, 30.2GW of new solar capacity is anticipated, including 21.1GW from utility-scale projects, 7GW from rooftop solar, and 2.05GW from off-grid sources.
