Tomato, Drumstick Prices Soar in Bengaluru; Onions Crash Amid Crop Damage
December 1, 2025
Bengaluru is facing a sharp rise in tomato and drumstick prices as cold weather sets in. Tomatoes now cost ₹80 per kilo and could hit ₹100 soon. Drumsticks, usually sold for around ₹200, are now ₹350. Traders blame heavy rains damaging crops in Kolar and Maharashtra. "Excessive rains have damaged tomato crop in the Kolar belt, the largest producer of tomatoes in South India," said Trimurti, a trader at Kolar APMC. Supplies from Gujarat and Rajasthan are missing for drumsticks, raising prices. A grocery procurement officer said, "What little is coming, is coming from Tamil Nadu. The price has shot up to ₹350. But it is not a staple vegetable, and people are not buying it at such high prices." Meanwhile, onion prices have fallen sharply because damp weather spoils the crop. Ravi Shankar, an onion trader at Yeshwantpur APMC, said, "Rains and moisture in the air have made the onions wet, which leads to early spoiling and sprouting." Good onions cost ₹25 to ₹35, but wet and spoiled onions sell for as low as ₹5 to ₹10. Usually, avarekai beans help lower prices during winter, but this year their supply is also hit. Beans cost between ₹80 and ₹110 now, and other vegetables remain costly. The market expects prices to drop only when avarekai arrives in full.
