North Korea Fires Flurry of Short-Range Ballistic Missiles

May 9, 2025

North Korea fired multiple types of short-range ballistic missiles, according to South Korea's military. The missiles, launched from the Wonsan area, flew up to about 800 kilometers before splashing down in the East Sea. This act of provocation has been strongly condemned by Seoul and the US. The launch, North Korea's first since March, came shortly after Kim oversaw the test-firing of a new warship weapons system named Choe Hyon. The vessel is claimed to be equipped with powerful weapons and could potentially enter operation next year. Analysts suggest the possibility of the ship being equipped with short-range tactical nuclear missiles, although North Korea's ability to miniaturize its nuclear weapons remains unproven. The destroyer may have been developed with Russian assistance, possibly in exchange for Pyongyang deploying troops to help Moscow fight Kyiv. In the past, North Korea has violated UN sanctions by launching ballistic missiles, raising concerns about potential weapon exports to Russia for use against Ukraine. The recent missile launch coincided with Russia's World War II Victory Day commemorations, indicating North Korea's stake in Russia's efforts. As relations between North and South Korea sour, the recent missile launch underscores the ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula.
