Honey Turns Sour as Beehives in Karnataka Come Under Attack
July 19, 2025
Beekeepers in Karnataka are grappling with a concerning new challenge as small hive beetles invade beehives, causing significant damage to bee colonies and disrupting honey production. With over 60,000 beekeepers in the state and an annual production of approximately 1,200 metric tons of honey, the impact of these pests is severe. The larvae of small hive beetles are particularly destructive, feeding on pollen and secreting a mucus that contaminates the honey, leading entire bee colonies to abandon their hives. This phenomenon has led to empty hives, decreased honey yields, and substantial financial setbacks for beekeepers engaged in apiculture across Karnataka.
