Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, in connection with an alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam. The arrest took place after a morning search at his premises. Chaitanya was sent to five-day ED custody by a special PMLA court in Raipur. The Congress party criticized the timing of the raid, linking it to an attempt to stifle debate on deforestation in the region. There were allegations of a senior bureaucrat being involved in the scam under the protection of a top state executive. Former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma was also arrested earlier in connection with the case. The ED claimed that Lakhma was aware of the liquor scam activities and received money from the syndicate. The agency has attached assets worth over Rs 200 crore in the case.
