Indian automotive major Maruti Suzuki has received a ₹2.5 crore tax demand from the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), Chandigarh. The company will be contesting the demand in the Supreme Court. The demand is for a four-year period between April 2006 and March 2010, and the original demand of ₹11.5 crore has been revised to ₹2.5 crore.
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has come to the rescue of a salaried individual who was deputed to work outside India, by holding that the salary income (which includes allowances) of a ‘non-resident’ for services rendered overseas cannot be taxed in India.
