Chennai Corporation has initiated an educational campaign to promote local biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastic bags in retail shops. The campaign involves advising traders to use banana leaf, cloth, and other affordable packaging materials. Additionally, the Corporation is exploring methods to incentivize conservancy workers involved in plastic waste segregation. The aim is to prevent plastics from reaching the ocean. As of December 2023, over 1,954 tonnes of plastic waste have been collected in five baling centers in the city.
