India and China have chosen not to participate in a pledge taken by 118 nations to triple global renewable energy generation capacity by 2030. India has cited its need for continued coal usage to fuel economic growth and lift millions out of poverty, while China has not given a reason for its abstention. Both countries are among the world’s largest coal consumers.
