A Special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana, has awarded death penalty to four convicts in a gangrape and double murder case that occurred over 7 years ago. The judge termed it a ‘rarest of rare case’ and justified the capital punishment by stating that the convicts were a serious threat to society with bleak chances of reformation.

The 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case surrendered at Godhra sub-jail in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district, half an hour before the deadline set by the Supreme Court. Some convicts walked in, while others arrived by car. The surrender came two days after the apex court dismissed their appeal for time. The court had quashed the early release order of the convicts who gang-raped Bilkis Bano and killed 14 of her family during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The Supreme Court has denied the request of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang-rape and murder case to extend the deadline to surrender. The convicts had cited medical problems and family responsibilities for seeking more time. The court stated that their reasons were not valid and ordered them to comply with the previous directions. The convicts are required to surrender by Sunday.
