Microsoft has claimed that Google’s access to data and AI-optimised chips gives it a competitive advantage in generative artificial intelligence (AI). In response to a consultation by the European Commission on competition in generative AI, Microsoft highlighted Google’s vertical integration and proprietary data from Google Search Index and YouTube as factors that contribute to its dominance. Microsoft also argued that partnerships and pro-competitive collaborations in the AI space can prevent anticompetitive advantages.

Zalando, Europe’s largest online fashion retailer, will revise its sustainability claims, following criticism from the European Commission. Zalando will provide more detailed information on product standards and sustainability. It will also remove sustainability flags and icons, using verifiable and impactful claims instead. This commitment comes after requests for information from the EU and legal disputes over Zalando’s designation as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP).

European regulators have expressed concerns that Amazon’s proposed acquisition of iRobot may harm competition. The European Commission believes that the buyout may hinder iRobot’s rivals from effectively competing on Amazon’s marketplace, particularly in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. They also believe that Amazon may engage in anti-competitive practices by limiting visibility and raising costs for iRobot’s rivals. The commission has until February 14th to make a final decision on the deal. Amazon’s acquisition of iRobot was announced last year for $1.7 billion.
