The Indian government has announced plans to end the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the India-Myanmar border. The FMR, implemented in 2018, allows visa-free travel for residents within 16 km of the border. However, it has been misused by insurgent groups to carry out attacks and escape to Myanmar. The government aims to strengthen border security, curb the influx of illegal immigrants, and disrupt smuggling networks. Fencing along the entire border will be implemented and visas will be required for cross-border travel.
