Government-backed hackers attempted to plant spyware on the iPhone of an Indian journalist working for OCCRP in August. The intrusion attempt was tied to the use of NSO Group’s Pegasus hacking tool. Apple warned the journalist and others in India about being targeted by state-sponsored hackers. The intrusion is considered unacceptable and outrageous, with no plausible explanation other than political gain.
