Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of fair and cooperative rules of engagement in the maritime order, expressing concern about the breakdown of civilised maritime relations if nations flout international law. He called for adherence to international laws and agreements, highlighting the significance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Singh also urged multinational collaboration to tackle maritime challenges and address issues such as climate change, illegal fishing, piracy, terrorism, and freedom of commerce. The remarks were seen as an indirect reference to China’s assertive behavior in the Indo-Pacific region.
