Environmentalists in Himachal Pradesh’s capital, Shimla, are urging the implementation of urgent remedial measures after an expert committee released a report highlighting the main reasons behind the significant damage caused during this year’s monsoon. The report identified two critical issues requiring attention: the adverse impact of unplanned construction activities leading to accumulation of old debris on fragile hill slopes, and the unplanned open drainage system causing soil erosion. Environmentalists stress the need for immediate action to preserve the town and advocate for multidisciplinary cooperation in identifying remedial measures.
