The government of Haryana has renamed 17 villages with embarrassing or outrageous names in the past eight years. The names were changed as part of a government initiative to fulfill long-standing requests from the residents. Muslim-sounding names were also changed. One of the most notable name changes was Gurgaon, which was renamed Gurugram to celebrate its connection with Mahabharat’s Guru Dronacharya. The renaming initiative was influenced by a resident’s complaint about feeling embarrassed and insulted by their village’s name.
