Under new rules unveiled by the White House, US federal agencies must demonstrate that their artificial intelligence tools do not endanger the rights and safety of the American people, or they will have to stop using them. The policy directive, part of President Joe Biden’s broader AI executive order, aims to ensure that AI systems used by government agencies do not produce biased or discriminatory outcomes. The rules also require agencies to hire a chief AI officer and make their AI inventory public.

The government has removed the 20% additional duty on apples and walnuts imported from the US. This move, resulting from the settlement of trade disputes, will not harm domestic producers as customs duties remain in place. Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal clarified that only the additional duty has been eliminated. The government has also implemented measures like customs duty and Minimum Import Price to protect domestic producers and ensure the entry of apples that meet the required standards.
