Five United Nations agencies have described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as ‘catastrophic’ and have called for more international assistance. Israel has announced plans to intensify its strikes in order to increase pressure on Hamas. The agencies state that more than 1.6 million people in Gaza are in critical need of humanitarian aid, with children, pregnant women, and the elderly being the most vulnerable.
