Over 300 Cases Booked, 100+ Autos Seized for Overcharging in Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, a recent enforcement drive targeted autorickshaw drivers overcharging passengers after the ban on bike-taxis. Around 300 violations were reported with over 100 autos seized. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy led the crackdown, involving 22 enforcement teams across the city. Violations included discrepancies in fare rates set by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA). Lack of essential documentation like permits and fitness certificates were also observed, leading to penalties ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000. Passengers complained about unauthorized charges by ride-hailing apps, contravening transport norms. The RTA has fixed a base fare of Rs 30 for the first 2km and Rs 15 for every additional km. The increasing demand for autos following the bike taxi ban has resulted in passengers being charged more than the prescribed fares. The transport department plans to assess the involvement of aggregators in the violations. President of the Autorickshaw Drivers' Union, CN Sreenivas, acknowledged that a significant portion of auto drivers have joined aggregator platforms, expressing concerns over their control and introduction of additional charges. The enforcement drive is set to continue, with discussions on revising auto fares ongoing. Auto unions are advocating for a base fare of Rs 40 for the first 2km and Rs 20 per km thereafter, while sources indicate that the RTA may consider setting the base fare at Rs 38 and Rs 18 per km subsequently. Transport authorities aim to meet the minister to address fare revision concerns.
