Microsoft to Lay Off Thousands of Employees in Second Wave of Job Cuts

July 3, 2025

In its second major layoff in months, Microsoft is reducing its workforce by less than 4%, equating to around 9,000 employees. The company stated that the job cuts would impact various teams globally, including the sales and Xbox divisions. This move follows a previous layoff of about 6,000 employees in May. The company's strategic realignment towards AI and organizational optimization seem to be driving these actions, ensuring long-term growth and competitiveness in the market. Bloomberg reported that Microsoft's Stockholm-based King division, known for Candy Crush, is slashing 10% of its staff. Job cuts are also underway in other European offices like ZeniMax. Microsoft's workforce stood at approximately 228,000 employees worldwide as of June 2024. The company's proactive approach towards workforce adjustments reflects its commitment to staying agile in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
