At nearly 90 years old, the Dalai Lama has stirred controversy by proposing to select his own successor. The title 'Dalai Lama' has deep roots, originating from Mongolian and Tibetan words for 'ocean' and 'spiritual teacher'. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the 14th in the lineage and has been living in exile in India since 1959. The succession process has led to confusion and division between China and Tibetans in exile.
