Covid vaccine & Karnataka’s recent cardiac deaths not linked, finds Jayadeva Institute report

July 7, 2025

A recent study conducted by the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, commissioned by the state government in Karnataka, has found no connection between Covid-19 vaccination and the increase in sudden cardiac deaths among young individuals. The study, led by Dr. KS Ravindranath, involved a thorough analysis of data from 251 patients with coronary artery disease. It highlighted that lifestyle changes during the pandemic, such as increased rates of metabolic disorders, sedentary lifestyles, poor diet, and substance abuse, may be contributing more significantly to the cardiovascular burden seen in the post-pandemic era. The research, which tapped into national and international data, indicated that Covid-19 vaccines, particularly inactivated and mRNA platforms, could even lower the chances of sudden cardiac death. Out of the 251 patients studied, most had been vaccinated, with a majority having received two doses of Covishield - the predominant vaccine in India. The study also pointed out that reported vaccine-related cardiac complications were rare, mild, and less severe compared to those stemming from actual Covid-19 infections. Comparing data from before the pandemic with the current scenario showed a slight increase in traditional cardiac risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol disorders, underscoring the influence of lifestyle changes on cardiovascular health. The findings stressed that while Covid-19 itself could elevate short-term cardiac risk due to inflammation and clotting issues, there was no solid evidence supporting a long-term heightened risk from vaccination. To address concerns about heart attacks and sudden deaths in the young population, the study indicated a need for a multifaceted approach focusing on lifestyle modifications and risk factor management.
