Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk's Tesla is selling its Model Y cars in India starting at ₹59,89,000, its website showed on Tuesday (July 15, 2025), as the electric car maker prepared to open its first showroom in Mumbai. As Tesla gears up to compete with German luxury giants like BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the premium EV segment, India's mass-market players, Tata Motors and Mahindra, will face new competition. India, the world's third-largest car market, has a small EV market share due to concerns about charging infrastructure. Elon Musk's entry into India aligns with the country's aim to increase EV sales to 30% by 2030, offering incentives to foreign automakers investing in local production. Tesla's prices for the Model Y in India start at ₹59.89 lakh ($69,756) for the rear-wheel drive option, with the long-range rear-wheel drive model priced at ₹67.89 lakh ($79,074), compared to the U.S., China, and Germany prices.
