The Coimbatore rural police have mobilized three special teams to apprehend a gang responsible for a daring robbery where a man was relieved of Rs 30 lakh on a weekend morning. The victim, identified as K Jayan, hailing from Wadakkanchery in Thrissur district of Kerala, had transitioned from running a gold ornaments polish shop in Coimbatore to working in a goldsmithery unit in Thrissur due to mounting losses. Jayan's friendly association with a gold businessman in RS Puram facilitated transactions involving large sums of money for the procurement of auctioned gold ornaments from Kerala. On the fateful day, the businessman entrusted Jayan with Rs 30 lakh for this purpose. Jayan segregated the funds, with Rs 20 lakh secured in a specialized jacket and the remaining Rs 10 lakh carried in a bag, as he set out on his motorcycle back to Kerala. The criminal episode unfolded as Jayan traversed the flyover at Ettimadai Pirivu around 7:45 am, culminating in a multipurpose vehicle blocking his path and three assailants forcibly dislodging him from his motorcycle. The perpetrators viciously stripped Jayan of his specially rigged jacket containing Rs 20 lakh while also seizing the remaining Rs 10 lakh from his bike, before callously abandoning him in the vicinity. Despite the harrowing encounter, Jayan delayed reporting the incident, eventually disclosing the ordeal to the relevant authorities in Coimbatore city after conferring with the businessman later that day. Dr. K Karthikeyan, the superintendent of police, lamented the missed opportunity to intercept the four-member gang promptly had Jayan sought immediate recourse. Subsequently, a formal police complaint was lodged at the KG Chavadi police station, prompting the expedited formation of three specialized units to track down the absconding perpetrators and recover the purloined amount. Efforts are underway to employ all resources and investigative acumen to swiftly bring the culprits to justice and prevent further criminal exploits in the region.
