In a significant crackdown, security forces in Manipur apprehended five suspects, including four militants affiliated with three banned outfits, for their involvement in extortion activities across various districts. The arrests took place on Wednesday during a heightened security operation aimed at combating ongoing violent activities fueled by ethnic tensions in the region. According to police reports, one of the detained individuals is an active cadre of the notorious Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA). The operation commenced at Ngaikhong Khunou check point in Bishnupur district, where this militant was nabbed along with an associate not connected to the group. They reportedly extorted money from local contractors, businessmen, and residents in the regions of Imphal and Bishnupur. Further investigations led to the arrest of a member of the Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) in Thoubal district. This individual was implicated in recruitment efforts, intimidation of civilians, and engaging in extortion activities. Additional arrests included a cadre of the outlawed Prepak (Pro) from Imphal West and another member of KCP (PWG) from Imphal East. Alongside these arrests, security forces conducted separate operations that resulted in the recovery of 26 firearms, nine explosives, and various ammunition from areas in Churachandpur and Thoubal on the same day. This operation comes in the wake of a broader initiative by security forces to address rising violence following ethnic clashes that erupted two years ago, which have led to over 260 fatalities and widespread displacement. The struggle primarily intensifies between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups. In response to the escalating violence, the Centre imposed President's rule in Manipur on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The state's legislative assembly remains in suspended animation as local authorities struggle to restore order and ensure public safety amidst these challenges.
