Himachal Pradesh is getting ready for a monsoon splash like never before! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert saying the rains won't stop until August 12. Thanks to the powerful partnership of the southwest monsoon and a western disturbance, many districts are in for heavy to hefty showers. Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the IMD Centre in Shimla, told ANI, "The intensity of rain over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the past 24 hours was due to the convergence of an active monsoon system and a western disturbance. This combination led to strong winds and localised cloud formation, which resulted in heavy to hefty rainfall in the hilly regions." Some spots have already seen sky-high rain numbers! Kasauli in Solan topped the chart with a whopping 145 mm rainfall, with Gohar in Mandi following close behind at 120 mm. Bilaspur, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Chamba districts also got their fair share of heavy rain. The IMD has waved yellow alerts—signaling heavy rain—for Bilaspur, Kangra, and Solan on August 6. Then, on August 7 and 8, places like Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, and Kullu can expect isolated heavy showers. From August 9 to 12, the rain will continue, though it might ease a bit after August 9. Sharma added, "The monsoon will remain active in Himachal Pradesh till August 12, with scattered rainfall continuing in different regions. Rain intensity is likely to dip marginally after the 9th, but precipitation will persist statewide." Visibility is also taking a hit because of the thick clouds and rain. Areas including Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur are facing low visibility, making travel tricky. Sharma said, "Visibility conditions in regions such as Shimla and Sirmaur have already been poor, and due to continuous rainfall and cloud formation, these are expected to remain affected between August 6 and 12." Here’s some super interesting IMD data: Himachal Pradesh has already received 77% more rain than usual for this part of August! Districts like Bilaspur, Solan, Una, Hamirpur, and Mandi are drenched with up to 1.5 times their normal August rainfall. Only Lahaul-Spiti is slipping below normal rain, while the rest of the state enjoys a surplus. Since June 1, the whole state is 18% wetter than the usual monsoon average. But watch out! Flash flood warnings have been raised especially for Mandi and nearby areas. Thanks to nonstop heavy rains, the risk of landslides and water logging is high in low-lying places. So, folks in Himachal, keep your eyes open, stay safe, and get ready for nature’s watery extravaganza!
