China's Ambassador Xu Feihong Urges India-China to Oppose Trade Wars and Boost $88 Billion Trade

September 9, 2025

China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, brought a big message packed with hope and challenge during his media speech on Monday. He said that India and China, two giant developing economies in Asia, must join hands to "firmly oppose any form of tariff and trade wars" and always protect the multilateral trade system that benefits all. According to Feihong, "Together, we should advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, firmly oppose any form of tariff and trade wars, jointly uphold the multilateral trading system, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and contribute to the collective rise of the Global South." Taking a swipe at the US, Feihong criticized the Donald Trump-era 50% tariffs on Indian goods. He said, "The United States has long benefited from free trade and is now using tariffs as a weapon to demand exorbitant prices." He called this high tariff rate “unfair and unreasonable” and stressed that China is firmly against it. Speaking about global unrest, Feihong gave a stark warning, saying the world is now facing "a new period of turbulence and transformation," where people must choose between "peace and war, dialogue and confrontation, win-win cooperation and zero-sum game." He noted the rise of unilateralism and bullying forces shaking global stability. When it comes to India-China relations, Feihong sounded hopeful and inspired. He emphasized that both countries should show "a global vision and responsibility as major powers" and help keep world peace while promoting common growth. “We should carry forward the great friendship forged during the War of Resistance, and jointly pursue a path of peaceful coexistence between major neighbouring countries,” he added. Trade ties between India and China are on a steady upward climb. In just the first seven months of this year, bilateral trade in goods hit a remarkable $88 billion, showing a 10.5% rise compared to last year. Feihong expressed readiness from China to work closely with India, sharing modernization strategies and development plans. This year marks a milestone—the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic relations. Feihong recalls the many ups and downs but highlights that “friendly cooperation has always been the dominant theme over the past 75 years.” He pointed to recent high-level meetings between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan and Tianjin as proof of growing mutual trust and progress. On the people-to-people front, Chinese missions in India have issued over 240,000 visas to Indians this year! Plus, special pilgrimages to sacred places like Kangrinboqe and Mapam Yuco in China's Xizang region have resumed. Meanwhile, India has restarted tourist visa issues for Chinese visitors. Feihong proudly said, “Both of which have been warmly received.” In short, amid global storms and tensions, China’s top diplomat in India is sending strong signals: trade wars must end, peace must grow, and India-China friendship can lead the way to global harmony and success!
