RG Kar Medical College Rape Victim's Parents Doubt Probe, Meet CBI Chief for Justice

August 8, 2025

In a twist to the tragic RG Kar Medical College case, the parents of the 26-year-old doctor, who was raped and murdered last year, met CBI Director Praveen Sood on Thursday. The parents are unhappy with the ongoing investigation by the CBI into their daughter's horrific death. They firmly believe that the accused, Sanjay Roy, did not act alone and suspect a bigger conspiracy. The victim’s father accused authorities of trying to destroy vital evidence, saying, "There were three bodies at the crematorium that day. Yet our daughter's body was cremated first. Why the hurry? Steps were taken to wipe out evidence." The victim’s mother also echoed their doubts: "From day one, we have said there was more than one person. She was a strong girl. There is no way only one man could have done this inside such a secure building. All the early cover-ups point to a bigger nexus." The parents visited the CBI headquarters and had a patient, half-hour-long meeting with Director Praveen Sood, who assured them "all assistance" to ensure the culprit is brought to justice. This was their second meeting with Sood. The case shook the whole nation when the young trainee post-graduate doctor was killed inside the seminar hall of the Chest Medicine Department at RG Kar Medical College during her night duty on August 9, 2022. It led to massive protests by doctors and students across India. In January, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. The court also fined Roy ₹50,000 and ordered ₹17 lakh compensation to the victim's family. Judge Das explained that the crime did not qualify as "rarest of rare" to award a death penalty. However, the CBI is not satisfied with the verdict and has challenged it in Calcutta High Court, demanding the death penalty for Roy, calling this a "rarest of rare" case. The parents are not stopping here. They plan to meet senior leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding a fresh look and justice for their daughter. To remember the victim and protest the lack of justice, the group 'Abhaya Mancha' is organizing two major events in Kolkata. On Raksha Bandhan, they will hold a public event, and on August 14, they plan a 'Reclaim the Night' march from 9 pm to midnight across Kolkata and nearby areas. Protestors will march toward the Kalighat area, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lives, keeping the pressure on authorities to act. This tragic case continues to stir fierce emotions across the country, as the victim’s family fights fiercely for full justice and truth behind the brutal crime.
