In a surprising twist, US President Donald Trump is open to holding a thrilling trilateral summit in the cold beauty of Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A top White House official revealed this exciting prospect on Saturday. Though the main plan now is a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin on August 15, this idea of joining forces with Zelenskyy is firmly on the table. “Right now, the White House is focusing on planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin,” said the senior official, but added, “The President remains open to a trilateral summit with both leaders.” Another insider said, “It’s being discussed,” and a senior administration source confirmed it was “absolutely” possible, stirring hope for a breakthrough. So how did we get here? Just the day before, Trump announced his intention to meet Putin in Alaska to push hard for a ceasefire in the long and painful Ukraine conflict. At first, the White House insisted that Putin had to meet Zelenskyy first, but that condition has now been dropped, opening doors to fresh diplomacy. But if Zelenskyy does come, it’s unclear if he and Putin will meet face to face. This peace push follows a recent Moscow visit by Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who delivered a warning: Putin must agree to a ceasefire soon or risk heavy sanctions. Putin didn’t bite. Instead, he floated a plan letting Russia keep large parts of occupied Ukrainian land. Zelenskyy slammed this idea, saying defiantly, “Ukrainians will not give their land to occupiers.” Trump, however, hinted at possible land swaps “to the betterment of both,” keeping the door open for compromise. Behind the scenes, US officials are hustling to gather support from Ukraine and Europe to back any peace deal. With tensions this high, will Alaska become the stage for a historic thaw? Only time will tell!
