Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Saturday that defence production in India has smashed the ₹1.5 lakh crore mark, touching ₹1,50,590 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year. This dazzling figure signals a power-packed growth in the country’s defence industrial base. The numbers speak loud: there’s an 18% jump from last year's ₹1.27 lakh crore, and a spectacular 90% surge since 2019-20 when production was just ₹79,071 crore. How did it happen? The government has been turbocharging the sector, encouraging homegrown companies to leap forward with programs like Emergency Procurement (EPs). These efforts gave a golden chance to startups and smaller firms to grab orders and shine. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) still reign, making up about 77% of the total production, but here’s the exciting twist – the private sector's slice has grown from 21% last year to 23% now. And it’s not stopping here! Experts expect this number to rocket up as the government opens big defence projects to competitive bidding. What’s fascinating is the new crowd of makers entering the battlefield – from car part manufacturers to builders – all turning their skills into cutting-edge military production. Officials said, "Both public and private segments of the industry have demonstrated consistent year-on-year growth, attributed to far-reaching policy reforms, enhanced ease of doing business, and a strategic focus on indigenisation over the past decade." And the cherry on top? Defence exports surged to ₹23,622 crore in 2024-25, marking a cool 12% rise from last year. India’s defence story is not just about strength but also growing global muscle.
