Jammu and Kashmir is buzzing with tension after AAP legislator Mehraj Malik from Doda was detained under the controversial Public Safety Act (PSA). On Thursday morning, a mild blast in Doda town shook residents, already on edge. But the drama really heated up in Srinagar, where police stopped AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh from holding a protest and locked the circuit house gates. Farooq Abdullah, the National Conference chief, was also blocked from meeting Singh. Singh, who arrived in Srinagar the night before with other AAP leaders, had planned a protest and press conference at Lal Chowk. But police trapped him inside the guesthouse, which he called a “police camp,” saying, “If this is not dictatorship, then what is it?” He claimed he was under “house arrest” with no explanation from authorities. Farooq Abdullah came to support Singh but was stopped at the gate. Singh even climbed a plastic chair to talk to him. Both leaders clashed openly with security, putting the spotlight on the powers of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Abdullah was blunt, saying, “An elected govt is in power in J&K, but the LG has become a king.” He left after telling Singh “khuda hafiz” from outside the gate. Omar Abdullah, former Chief Minister, slammed the LG for “illegal detention” and “highhandedness.” He said, “They claim everything is fine in J&K; that the atmosphere is good, people are happy, and ‘naya Kashmir’ is emerging. The reality is they do nothing except use force.” He questioned the legal basis for Malik’s arrest and the detention of Singh, warning it harms democracy. Meanwhile, the blast in Dumri-Thukar Mohalla of Doda caused panic but no injuries. Two people were detained for questioning. Doda stayed calm but tense under ongoing prohibitory orders while protests continue over Malik’s detention. Shamas Udin Malik, Mehraj Malik’s father, made a heartfelt plea, apologizing for his son’s “unparliamentary” language against the local deputy commissioner. He accused the official of a personal grudge and said, “I have full faith that LG sahib and Modi sahib will definitely do justice with us. We humbly urge the Prime Minister and the LG to release him and reunite our family.” The situation remains fragile as political leaders and locals await developments in this gripping saga.
