Hold on to your wallets! July 2025 witnessed a massive surge in India's digital payment scene as UPI transactions hit an all-time high. On average, a whopping 628 million UPI transactions were conducted every single day in July, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The heat is really on in the groceries and supermarkets sector, which saw over 3 billion UPI transactions worth ₹64,882 crore! Hungry for more? Fast food joints weren’t far behind, with 1.22 billion transactions logged, while other restaurants and eating spots recorded 1.15 billion transactions. Clearly, Indians love paying their bills online wherever they eat! But when it comes to value, the spotlight shines on loans, credit card repayments, and buy now, pay later bills. A staggering ₹93,857 crore was settled via UPI in July alone, making these sectors the cash kings of the digital space. For the first time ever, NPCI has revealed UPI data sorted by merchant categories. With these fresh insights, experts expect NPCI might soon publish names of top merchants benefiting from the zero merchant discount rate (MDR) model. Imagine knowing exactly who’s winning big in this digital game! Let's talk growth: UPI transaction volume zoomed up by 35% year-on-year to hit 19.47 billion transactions in July. The total value of transactions jumped 22% to ₹25.08 lakh crore. In comparison, June saw 18.4 billion transactions worth ₹24.04 lakh crore using UPI. The digital payment wave is rolling fast and furious, making life easier and wallets happier across India. So next time you swipe on your phone at your favorite grocery store or repay that loan, remember - you’re part of a giant cashless revolution!
