KOLKATA: The tragic saga of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case took a fresh, fiery turn on Tuesday! The victim’s family has stepped up, lodging a complaint with Kolkata police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against police officers who allegedly assaulted the victim’s mother during a protest on August 9. The 31-year-old junior doctor’s brutal murder inside RG Kar Hospital on August 9, 2024, shocked the whole nation. To mark her first death anniversary, thousands including doctors, BJP, and CPI(M) workers gathered for a protest march to Nabanna, the state secretariat. But chaos erupted near Park Street when police stopped the crowd. The victim’s mother suffered a painful head injury during this clash. She claimed, “some police personnel assaulted me with batons,” forcing her to seek treatment at a private hospital. Her angry family fought back — the victim’s father said, “I lodged the complaint through email. I sent it to Shakespeare Sarani police station but they said it should be addressed to the New Market police station.” He added, “The authorities accepted my complaint and sent an acknowledgement mail.” However, Kolkata police’s Joint Commissioner Meeraj Khalid painted a different picture. Speaking on Tuesday afternoon, he said, “police teams had scrutinised all security camera footage over three days but not found any evidence of the alleged assault.” He challenged, “All media houses covered the demonstration. If you have any evidence, please help us by providing it.” The family alleged that due to political pressure, the victim’s mother was not officially admitted at the private hospital and was released quickly. The hospital, however, has not commented yet, and the ruling Trinamool Congress strongly denied this claim. Meanwhile, Kolkata police commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma visited SSKM Hospital on Sunday to check on cops injured by BJP workers during the protest. Several FIRs have been filed against BJP leaders and MLAs for that day’s violence. Verma said, “it was regrettable that the RG Kar victim’s mother got injured. Whether they lodge a complaint or not, it is our duty to find out what happened. We are examining footage from all security cameras, surveillance drones and body cameras worn by policemen.” Adding fuel to the fire, Sanjay Roy, a 34-year-old civic volunteer linked with the police, was convicted in January and sentenced to life imprisonment. The victim’s family, however, still accuses the state of shielding the real culprits. In the latest legal twist, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday admitted a fresh petition filed by the victim’s family seeking a new investigation into the case. The hearing is set for later this month. The RG Kar case continues to stir emotions and political battles, with justice hanging in the balance.
