A report submitted by the Alappuzha district administration to the State government recommends the creation of a Kuttanad Interpretation Centre to rejuvenate the Vembanad Lake area. The proposed centre seeks to redefine tourism in the region by providing an experiential knowledge hub for visitors. It aims to immerse visitors in the cultural and environmental heritage of Kuttanad through interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and digital documentation. The report highlights the unstructured and underutilised nature of tourism in Kuttanad and emphasizes the need to integrate conservation, education, and tourism effectively. The centre's overarching goal is to ensure that revenue generated through tourism directly benefits the local communities. By engaging traditional artisans, farmers, and small-scale entrepreneurs in various programmes associated with the centre, the initiative aims to create sustainable livelihoods and preserve dying art forms. The design director at Kuttanadan Initiatives, Rahul K. Sukumaran, envisions the centre as an educational space where visitors can learn about the region's biodiversity, history, and sustainable agricultural practices. In addition to attracting a diverse range of visitors, including scholars, eco-tourists, and cultural enthusiasts, the centre will provide training programmes for farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs, thus contributing to the long-term preservation of Kuttanad's cultural and natural heritage. The report suggests that the ₹10 crore project, spanning 1,000 sq.m., could be implemented over two years through government funding, public-private partnerships, international development funds, or a combination of these sources. Overall, the Kuttanad Interpretation Centre project aims to transform tourism in the region by fostering community participation, economic development, and cultural preservation while providing a unique and enriching experience for visitors.
