The winds of change are blowing at Tamil Nadu’s export front! The State government, led by Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa, called a lively meeting with exporters from key sectors to tackle the heavy tariffs recently imposed by the United States. The meeting took place at Guidance Tamil Nadu and included exporters from big-name sectors like textiles, automobiles, gems & jewellery, heavy engineering, and electronics. Minister Rajaa made it clear, “In the midst of significant shifts in global trade flows, it is imperative for us to listen directly to our exporters, understand the hurdles in their paths and calibrate our policy response to safeguard their competitiveness.” Indeed, Tamil Nadu is no small player—accounting for nearly 31 per cent of India’s exports to the US, while India’s overall exports to the US stand at just about 20 per cent. What’s his game plan? Mr. Rajaa is counting on the Union Government to chalk out a national trade policy that cushions exporters from shocks. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu will “act quickly, decisively, and in close coordination with industry” to protect its massive export engine. He also sees this challenge as a golden chance. “The government is taking this as an opportunity to identify structural fixes that will serve exporters in the long term,” he said boldly. Firm and clear, he added, “We are determined to ensure Tamil Nadu, as India’s export engine, remains strong and future-ready.” What’s next? More meetings and consultations are lined up soon, and Mr. Rajaa confirmed the support of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister to navigate through these testing times. With the resilience and grit of its people, Tamil Nadu is all set to zoom into its next level of export growth. Finally, the minister assured everyone that the government will protect the interests of both primary and secondary sectors from all outside shocks.
