India-Russia Power Talk: Lavrov Meets Jaishankar in Moscow on August 21 to Boost Ties

August 14, 2025

Get ready for some exciting diplomacy! Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is all set to meet Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on August 21 in Moscow. This meeting, announced by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on their social media platform X, shines a spotlight on the ever-strengthening relationship between Moscow and New Delhi. Their bond has become even more important lately because the U.S. has slapped higher tariffs on Indian imports for buying Russian oil. This move has only pushed India and Russia closer, showing a rock-solid strategic partnership. According to the official X post from Russia's Foreign Ministry, "On August 21, FM Sergey Lavrov will hold talks with FM of India S. Jaishankar in Moscow. The Ministers will discuss key issues on our bilateral agenda, as well as key aspects of cooperation within international frameworks." This isn’t the first time these power players have sat together recently. They met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 15. The ministry shared, "Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of External Affairs of India @DrSJaishankar hold a meeting on the sidelines of the #SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting." The diplomacy heat is rising on multiple fronts! This high-level chit-chat follows another important meeting between Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Russian Defence counterpart Andrey Belousov at the SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Qingdao, China, in June. They talked seriously about delivering S-400 missile systems, upgrading the Su-30 MKI fighter jets, and getting critical military hardware delivered fast, as an official statement from India's Ministry of Defence highlighted. There was more action in early July too! On July 6, during the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Lavrov and Jaishankar had a heart-to-heart. The Russian Foreign Ministry tweeted, "Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of External Affairs of India @DrSJaishankar hold a meeting on the sidelines of the XVII #BRICS Summit. Rio de Janeiro, July 6." These summit meets are where major global moves happen. BRICS, hosted by Brazil, brought leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia, making it a giant melting pot of power talks. Going back a bit, Lavrov and Jaishankar also caught up in Johannesburg in February this year. They checked the pulse of India-Russia cooperation and promised to deepen their ties. India’s warmth towards Russia is clear! Even an all-party delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi visited Russia in May under India's global outreach program, Operation Sindoor, where she stressed India’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. All these sparkling talks and visits show one thing loudly — India and Russia are cooking up a stronger recipe for friendship, defence cooperation, and teamwork on international platforms. The August 21 meeting in Moscow will be yet another exciting chapter in their ongoing saga.
