The 428km Manali-Leh high altitude highway, a crucial lifeline connecting Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, has reopened after being shut down for over five months during the harsh winter period. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) dedicated 46 days to clear up the highway, starting from Atal Tunnel's north portal all the way to Sarchu, the final border point in Himachal Pradesh. The task was arduous as massive snow walls, some towering between 30-40ft, had to be brought down to make the route navigable again. The high mountain passes of Taglang La (5,328m), Nakee La (4,739m), Lachung La (5,059m), and Baralacha La (4,850m) were also successfully cleared in the process, ensuring safe passage for travelers and vehicles. The closure of this vital route during the winter months is a routine practice to prevent accidents and mishaps caused by heavy snowfall and icy conditions. The reopening of the Manali-Leh highway is a significant milestone, facilitating smoother connectivity between the two regions and boosting trade and tourism activities. Travelers can now embark on their journeys through this picturesque and challenging terrain, marveling at the stunning vistas and experiencing the thrill of crossing some of the highest motorable passes in the world.
